Clinician section

A clinical referral pathway for treating practitioners

This section is for GPs, psychiatrists and psychologists considering referring a patient with treatment-resistant depression or treatment-resistant PTSD, people who have been through standard treatment options without finding sufficient relief. Entheo Psychology delivers medicine-assisted therapy under Australia's TGA Authorised Prescriber Scheme, and we work alongside referring clinicians at every stage: from initial screening through treatment planning, with your involvement welcomed where appropriate.

Prospective clients and members of the public can use our general enquiry pathway instead.

General enquiries

Is this the right pathway?

A quick eligibility self-filter

Referrals are welcomed for patients who meet the following criteria, consistent with current TGA requirements.

  • A confirmed diagnosis of treatment resistant depression or PTSD, previously diagnosed by a psychologist or psychiatrist.

  • A minimum of two unsuccessful courses of standard treatment of adequate duration.

  • No personal or family history of psychosis, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, including first and second degree relatives.

  • Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding.

A referral enables entry into our screening process and does not guarantee acceptance into treatment. Final suitability is confirmed following comprehensive clinical and medical assessment.

Who delivers the treatment

The clinical team, and your place in it

Care is delivered by a small, consistent team. Referring clinicians remain part of the picture throughout, and collaboration is built into the pathway rather than added to it.

Authorised prescriber

A TGA Authorised Prescriber leads medical screening, provides ongoing medical oversight across the protocol, and holds overall clinical responsibility for the medicine sessions.

Dedicated therapist team

A team of psychologists delivers the preparation, medicine-session and integration work, the psychological spine of the protocol, so patients see familiar faces at every stage.

Referring clinicians

Where appropriate, you are welcome to participate as a co-therapist alongside an Entheo-provided primary therapist, including during preparation and integration work. We will discuss the shape of your involvement at referral.

Helpful referral information

Including the following in your initial referral helps us direct it to the right clinician quickly.

  • • Current diagnosis and reason for referral
  • • Previous psychological and pharmacological treatments
  • • Current medicines and relevant medical history
  • • Current treating team and risk considerations

Referrals are reviewed by our authorised prescriber and clinical team. Please avoid including sensitive health information in the first email until a secure exchange has been arranged.

Referral pathway

What to expect after a referral

Referral begins a suitability assessment; it does not confirm acceptance or treatment eligibility.

1

Send an initial referral

Include the presenting condition, treatment history, current medications, relevant medical history and your contact details.

2

Clinical review

We review the information and may contact you or the prospective patient to clarify whether a full assessment is appropriate.

3

Assessment and liaison

Psychological and medical suitability are assessed. With consent, we coordinate with the existing treating team.

4

Outcome and next steps

We communicate the outcome of assessment and discuss treatment planning or alternative recommendations as appropriate.

Continuity of care

We keep you informed

With your patient's consent, we provide updates at key points, after assessment, at the start of treatment, and at agreed review points, so you retain a clear picture of the care we are providing. Your ongoing role as the patient's primary treater continues throughout.

A formal pathway back

If a patient is not suitable after assessment, or does not respond to treatment, we provide a formal referral-out pathway: a written summary of what was tried, our clinical observations, and recommendations to support continued care with you.
